Community Supported Agriculture, CSA, is a concept that has become increasingly popular throughout the United States. CSAs are established to provide members with fresh, high-quality, local food all through the growing season, while guaranteeing local farmers a secure market. This partnership allows growers and members to share the rewards and challenges of farming.
Schreiber & Sons CSA: Schreiber & Sons Farm was approached with the idea of establishing a CSA program for the Tri-Cities region in 2006. We only had 8 members that year but both we and our members were happy with the outcome. Our first year's success encouraged us to expand the program in 2007. We had forty-four members the second year. We provided members with over 100 different crop/variety combinations over a 25 week period. So we are forging ahead with an expanded program for 2008 & 2009.
Every Week, from the first week of May through late November, Schreiber & Sons CSA members will receive a wide variety of local, conventionally or organically grown vegetables, fruits and herbs. Nutritional information and recipes pertaining to the freshly harvested produce can be found on our web site.

At the drop site
We will have three box sizes; one for small, one for medium, and one for large. The boxes will look different as well as being different sizes. (See below for pictures of boxes.) When you arrive at your CSA pick-up location during your pick-up window, take the box that corresponds with your share size. When picking up your box, all boxes within a share size will be the same; please do not sort through produce to determine if a box is better. This only leads to bruised, mushy produce for the people who come later in the drop site time frame. (For previous CSA members, weekly boxes will not be marked with your name unless you have ordered extra produce or supplemental items. We are able to not label boxes this year due to having organic and conventional on different days as well as having different boxes for each share size.) Each week in your box you will find a half sheet of paper which will list the items of produce you should receive in your box in additional to a small amount of information as to what they may look or taste like. (This piece of paper is called the Box Sheet-it will become very important to you.) You can find further information, recipes, and history on the crops you will receive in your box on in your weekly CSA emails and at www.schreiberandsons.com.
At the drop site there will be a plastic lug containing miscellaneous produce and a sign that says “Choice Box”. If there is an item in your CSA box that you don’t want you may trade it with something from this box only. (Please do not trade from other CSA member boxes.) When using the choice box, please be courteous about both the handling of the produce, tomatoes particularly love to get squished, and the amount of produce you exchange for an item, for example, one bag of salad from a medium box might be equal to a pound of asparagus… not 3 or 4 pounds.
There will be a Will Call area. This area will have CSA member boxes that are marked with their name and there will be a sign that says “Will Call”. Boxes in this area are for CSA members who have ordered additional produce or add-ons. Members with boxes in the Will Call area will not need to take a non-labeled CSA box, all their produce including ordered extra produce will be inside the box in the Will Call area.
Bear in mind that the pick-up sites are provided by fellow CSA members who volunteer their homes and personal space. Please respect their privacy and recognize the value of their contribution. If you see stray box sheets or boxes, please pick them up and put them where they belong, we need to keep yards and driveways clean so that we may continue to use the drop site throughout the season.
Each week return your boxes, flattened, to the drop site. You should notice a pile of flattened boxes; this is where yours should go. Re-using boxes week after week helps us to keep both production and membership costs down.

Extra produce:
Throughout the season we will let you know about surplus produce that we may have at the farm. You can order extra produce by either calling or emailing us at the farm. If you order extra produce that week your box will be labeled with your name and will be placed in the will call area.
Add-On Items:
The flour, eggs and beef will be picked up with your box. If you have ordered an add-on, your box will be placed in the Will Call area--separate from the usual pick-up spot. To ensure the freshness of the beef, you will need to pick up your box within a very specific time frame.
To place your order for beef, flour or eggs, you will have to call or email the office (for chickens, see below); we will confirm your order either by phone or by email. Orders can be made on a week-by-week basis or you can request a product, eggs for example, be included in your box on a regular schedule.
Chickens will be processed on May 16th and 17th and June 6th and 7th. Visit www.greenehillsfarm.com to place a $5.00 per bird deposit, which will be applied to the final price of $3.00/lb, finished weight is around 4-5 lbs. Greene Hill Farms will contact you regarding the date to pick up your chickens from our farm. Bring a cooler, because chickens will be fresh. For more information call at 509-588-2794.
Some items require a minimum volume per purchase, minimum orders are as follows:
- Eggs – One dozen
- Flour – One five pound sack
- Free-Range Chicken – One whole chicken
Out of town?
If you will be out of town for a week, let us know. We can hold your box for a few days, a full week is too long, or you can have us skip your box for the week. Many previous members favorite option and our recommendation is to have a friend or neighbor pick up the box for you.
